GENTLEWAVES PHOTOREJUVENATION LED

GentleWaves® is the perfect complement to facials, microdermabrasions, chemical peels, waxing services, Botox, IPLs and laser treatments with a visable reduction in redness.

With Gentle Waves™ LED Photomodulation, skin cells are activated causing them to produce collagen and multiply while simultaneously suppressing collagen-degrading enzymes that facilitate the aging process.  you'll enjoy softer, smoother, more even toned skin with a visible reduction in wrinkles, redness, brown spots and pore size.

LED Treatments - Through Deep Penetrating Light

Laboratory studies have shown that skin cells grow 150-200 percent faster when exposed to certain LED light wavelengths.  Independent research for over 40 years has shown LED red and infrared light delivers powerful therapeutic benefits to living tissue.  Both visible red and infrared light has been shown to affect at least 24 different positive changes at a deep level.  Visible red light, at wavelengths from 630-660 nanometers, penetrates tissue to a depth of 8-10 mm.  LED light is very beneficial in treating problems close to the skins surface such as wounds, cuts, and scars.  Skin layers, because of their high blood and water content, absorb red light very readily and deliver enough energy to stimulate a response from the body to heal itself.

LED Photons must be absorbed to produce a biological response.  All biological systems have a unique absorption spectrum, this uniqueness determines which wavelengths of light will be absorbed to produce a given therapeutic effect.  The visible red and infrared portions of the spectrum have been shown to be highly absorbent and produce unique restorative effects in living tissues.  It is thought that light photons are absorbed by the skin and underlying tissue and triggers biological changes within the body in a process know as photobiomodulation.  Although the exact mechanism of action is still undergoing study, what is know is that monochromatic light increases oxygen and blood flow, facilitating wound healing.

LED therapy is a non-invasive procedure that activates skin cells with pulses of low-level, non-thermal light energy.  LED therapy converts light energy within the skin cells, like photosynthesis, which takes sunlight and converts it into food energy in plants.

LED therapy is one of the few non-invasive tools available that can reverse the appearance of aging skin, such as wrinkles and mottled skin tone.

The LED skin light  provides a proprietary lightwave design that penetrates deep into the skin to erase the appearance of aging - fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged

Photorejuvenation with LEDs (light emitting diodes) is a non-invasive method of rejuvenating the skin. The LEDs emit light that stimulates skin cell activity without causing damage to the skin's dermis or epidermis. LED treatments have no downtime, no side effects, and can be used on any skin type. LED photorejuvenation is FDA approved for the treatment of wrinkles around the eyes and is generally performed as a full-face procedure.

LED photorejuvenation is intended for patients who wish to undergo a non-invasive zero downtime procedure to help rejuvenate the skin of their face. In our office we use LED photorejuvenation on our IPL and Laser resurfacing patients to enhance the results that we can achieve with Fraxel Laser resurfacing alone. By doing this, our patients gain additional smoothing and wrinkle reduction. They receive the benefit of two skin rejuvenation procedures, not just one.

We perform the LED photorejuvenation on a complementary basis for our Fraxel patients, allowing them to gain this additional improvement at no additional charge. Photorejuvenation with LEDs can also be done by itself, without Fraxel Laser resurfacing, as a series of LED treatments. For patients not undergoing Fraxel Laser treatment, the charge is $125 per LED treatment.

How It Works

With aging and sun exposure, there is a diminishing amount of collagen in the skin. The LED lights act by stimulating skin cells to produce new collagen. There are two different lights that are utilized in LED photorejuvenation. First, red light from the Omnilux "Revive" LED is absorbed by the fibroblasts in the skin, which are the collagen producing cells. This stimulates the fibroblasts and results in increased collagen production. Then, the near-infrared light from the Omnilux "Plus" LED is delivered to the skin and is absorbed by cells called fibromyocytes. The stimulation of the fibromyocytes results in increased tone and improved alignment of the newly produced collagen. The two lights, when combined in this manner, work synergistically and provide optimum LED photorejuvenation.

Results

In clinical trials of LED photorejuvenation, more than 70% of patients reported an excellent result and over 80% reported softening of wrinkles. Skin roughness was also significantly improved. In addition, our patients find the treatments to be soothing and relaxing.

Physician Testimonial:

"The way that I view GentleWaves® is that it delivers what glycolic and beta-life peels promised but without any pain or downtime. Most importantly GentleWaves® actually delivers consistent efficacy, unlike the unpredictable results of peels. There is an overall skin smoothing with reduction in background erythema and pigmentation."

Robert Weiss, M.D.
Director, Maryland Laser Skin and Vein Institute

In 2003, Light BioScience® changed the way dermatologists approached anti-aging and skin rejuvenation with the introduction of the GentleWaves® LED Photomodulation®. With LEDs, GentleWaves® uses a carefully timed sequence of emissions to activate the skin's natural rejuvenation process. This novel technique to skin rejuvenation has no pain, side effects, or downtime. It is extremely fast, lasting only a few minutes. GentleWaves® has clinically demonstrated to show improvement in the majority of patients after 8 treatments.

The treatment of choice for cosmetic surgeons worldwide for wrinkle reduction, brown spots and freckles (hyperpigmented lesions) and other skin conditions associated with sun damaged skin, GentleWaves® LED Photomodulation® is safe, affordable and effective for all skin types. There is no pain, redness, peeling, side effects or downtime involved with GentleWaves®; zero aftercare is needed.

There are many ideal candidates for GentleWaves®, including:

Individuals who have been waiting for a gentle, pain-free skin fitness regime without side effects, downtime or a huge investment, as well as:

  • Individuals wanting to reduce the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles.
  • Individuals desiring younger, radiant looking skin.
  • Individuals wanting to enhance benefits of laser surgery, face lift and/or plastic surgery.
  • Individuals seeking to repair sun damage and improve the appearance of age spots

April, 2006 - The 70-second wrinkle eliminator What it is: Lasers can burn. Intense Pulsed Light can redden skin, but GentleWaves® Select has neither of these drawbacks. This device is a smaller, more portable version of GentleWaves®, the light-emitting diode (LED) machine cleared but the FDA last year for diminishing the appearance of eye wrinkles. (Some doctors believe it can also reduce pore size and speed wound healing.) This compact model - intended for spas operated by physicians - emits the same strength of pulsing yellow light as the original, and it is just as effective. The only difference is that the larger version treats the whole face in 35 seconds, whereas this one can treat only half the face in that time. How it works: The light stimulates skin cells to produce healthy, new skin-plumping collagen and slow the breakdown of existing collagen. When study subjects were exposed to this light twice a week for eight weeks, they had a measurable improvement in fine lines and wrinkles. Research has found that a rest period between sessions is important for effectiveness. When available: this medical-spa version was just released in March. According to some doctors, an at-home version is on the drawing board.

March, 2006 - The bright idea Roy Geronemus, MD. When a laser company has a new machine, it goes straight from R&D to NYC dermatologist Roy Geronemus, MD. If Geronemus, the founder of the laser program at New York University School of Medicine (he's a clinical professor there), doesn't give his stamp of approval, chances are the laser will never hit the market. The author of more than 165 medical articles and books, Geronemus has also been involved in technology trials, such as those for the light-emitting diodes that led to the development of the GentleWaves® skin rejuvenation machine. Trick of the trade: While Geronemus' office has a makeup room where patients can pop in after a laser procedure to cover any flushing, the doctor often sends clients for a GentleWaves® session instead. "We've found that two 35-second doses of GentleWaves® post-laser treatment minimizes redness."

May, 2005 - A New Treatment For Eye Wrinkles Wrinkles in the skin around the eyes can be smoothed safely and effectively with a device called GentleWaves®, the FDA has determined. Wearing protective covers over the eyes themselves, patients sit facing a panel embedded with 2,000 tiny, pulsating yellow lights. "For the first time, we are both slowing collagen breakdown and building up new collagen with no pain, no redness, and no serious side effects," says Robert A. Weiss, associate professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who participated in a study involving 90 patients. The treatment, which is the only one of its kind approved for eye wrinkles, can target other areas and reduce pigmentation as well. Best results occur after two sessions a week for at least a month, and it is considered especially effective after microdermabrasion. It is not a substitute for eyelid surgery, w hich removes excess skin and bulging fat around the eyes.

April, 2005 - Beauty ID: light-emitting diodes What if turning on collagen production were as easy as flipping on a television? Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the power source behind the latest wrinkle-erasing machines, have come a long way from their humble beginnings in remote controls and alarm clocks. Using less energy than the average desk lamp, LEDs emit a gentle UV-free beam powerful enough to cure skin problems from acne to cancer. Recent research on LEDs proves the diodes do more than boost collagen; they can also minimize breakouts and calm inflammations. While all colors may increase cellular fibroblast activity, certain shades have a targeted effect. A 2004 study published in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology reported that eight 35-second treatments with the yellow LEDs found in GentleWaves® machines (which were FDA approved for wrinkles earlier this year) reduced fine lines by 56 percent, redness by 65 percent, and hyperpigmentation by 62 percent. But the glowing skin of the gentlemen who invented GentleWaves® is perhaps the best advertisement for LEDs. "Every couple of months I would see these older scientists at derm meetings and they kept looking younger and younger. When I asked what they were doing to their skin, they said they were using GentleWaves®," says Lisa Airan, MD, a clinical instructor of dermatology at NYC's Mount Sinai Hospital. "That cemented my decision to buy it for my practice."

August, 2005 - What do P.Diddy, Tory Burch, and Donna Karan have in common? They all trust their skin to Patricia Wexler, M.D. gentle~waves The progressive "bottled light" technology contained in all of her new products was developed with combating these problems in mind. It is modeled after GentleWaves® L.E.D. Photomodulation, the recently FDA-approved "lunchtime" treatment in which a narrow band of light diodes pulsates across the face for 45 seconds at a time, producing firmer, plumper, more elastic skin over a series of sessions. ("I have patients who are enjoying it more than Botox and fillers," says Wexler. "Tory Burch had it done, and within weeks, ten of her friends came in asking for the same thing.") The treatment works by "shutting off" the harmful matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) - enzymes in the skin, significantly higher in postmenopausal women, caused by environmental insults like UV exposure - which hinder collagen and elastin production. "Studies have shown that not only was less collagen and elastin breaking down with GentleWaves®, but that more was being produced," she says.

GentleWaves® This painless light therapy offers help for former sun-worshippers. The promise: Imagine a pain-free, low-energy light that, when shined on skin for less than a minute, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, reduces pore size, diminishes dark spots, and gives skin a smoother texture. That's the claim made by GentleWaves®, a new device that uses a light-emitting diode, or LED, to help "recharge the batteries" of skin cells, encouraging collagen production. The reality: GentleWaves® won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last December, backed by a trial in which every patient had smoother skin, less redness, and improvement in wrinkles around the eyes. It seems that doctors are giving the therapy a vote of confidence, too: "I've found that it really does give people a more even skin tone and smoother texture," Alster says. Because its light source isn't heat-generated, it is painless. The numbers: Doctors suggest a series of treatments once a week for 6 weeks. (Follow-up procedures are recommended anywhere from monthly to twice a year.) You'll see results in about 4 weeks, with continued improvement for up to a year. Cost: $60 to $100 per treatment. The bottom line: Fast, ouchless, and comparatively inexpensive to correct fine lines and sunspots. But don't expect dramatic tightening.
