Fractional or Fractionated laser skin resurfacing has been featured on the Today Show's Mini Medical Miracles with Kathy Lee, Entertainment Tonight, Oprah, and The View, just to name a few. It has been a news spot on news channel after news channel and has been seen in magazine after magazine. But why has it gotten all this attention? The answer is simple. Fot its abilities to removes wrinkles, tighten skin, and thereby prevent the need for a face lift later in life.
As the body ages, the appearance and characteristics of the skin alter. The epidermis becomes thinner so blemishes become more visible. Collagen in the dermis is gradually lost which contributes to the formation of facial lines, sagging skin and wrinkles.
Fractional laser treatements, which are also called "Fractionated", is an outstanding option for skin rejuvenation and is used used to treat sun-damaged and aging skin. Whilst ablative laser treatments work mainly on the epidermis (surface skin cells) and non-ablative treatments work solely on dermal collagen (mid-layer of skin) only, fractional laser treatment works at both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. How fractional laser treatments work: Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing works by targeting both the epidermis and dermis and treating it a percentage or fraction at a time, hence the name Fractional. It does this by delivering tens of thousands of tiny but deep laser microbeams, called microthermal treatment zones (MTZs), into the desired areas of treatment.

You will see marked improvement after only your first treatment but in order to obtain the desired results a series is usually recommended*. Significant improvement has been achieved for acne scars, pigmentation disorders such as melasma, sun and age-damaged skin, lines and wrinkles, along with improvement in stretch marks and striae all scientifically documented from clinical researchers.
* Treatment consists of 1,000-2,000 microthermal zones per centimeter squared. Each treatment replaces about 15% to 20% depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment. So, as can easily be computed mathematically, in order to treat 100% of the skin 5 to 6 treatments are required
Doctors such as Dr. Christopher Zachary, professor at UC Irvine, have hailed the new laser procedure. "There's no doubt in my mind, that this is indeed the biggest breakthrough in wrinkle removal in the last 5 to 10 years" said Dr Zachary. "This is going to change the way physicians think about treating the skin, rejuvenating the skin - if you attack wrinkles, furrows when patients are 40 or 50, patients are never going to get the saggy skin that they used to get when they were 50 or 60, it is not out to replace the face lift but to get to you before you ever need one.
