- Acne scarring - atrophic acne scars, pitted acne scars, back acne.
- Profractional -  Erbium Fractional laser Resurfacing

ProFractional™ Repair Laser - New Ground-Breaking Treatment for Your Skin

Sciton has developed a new fractional laser skin resurfacing  technology called ProFractional,  This new  ProFractional Repair laser skin resurfacing technology offers a painless solution for  improving acne scars and aging skin. The ProFractional laser heats tissue to a depth that effectively treats wrinkles and tightens the skin. I have used ProFractional alone and combined with Thermage to provide results comparable to deep laser skin resurfacing with significantly less recovery time.  I'm getting excellent results treating acne scars and aged skin with the ProFractional laser.  Many of my patients are surprised by how little it hurts when preceded by topical anesthetic cream. I can control the depth of treatment allowing me to treat deep into the dermis which is ideal for acne scars. All my patients have noticed improved skin tone, texture and smoothness. Patients can see improvements in ice pick and depressed scars after just one treatment.

Sciton Laser Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing with the Sciton Erbium Laser is the new standard for treating moderate to severely sun damaged, wrinkle treatment and acne scarring. If you have 5 -7 days to spare a resurfacing can take 5 - 15 years off your face. COntoure's Sciton Profile is arguably the finest resurfacing laser in the world.

The promise, risks, and reality

Ablative laser skin resurfacing is a process where the upper layers of aged or damaged skin are vaporized by applying a controlled CO2 laser beam. Do not confuse ablative laser resurfacing with nonablative laser treatments where the skin surface remains largely intact such as Contoure's Sellas 1550 profractional. If you are looking for a no downtime procedure then please see "Fractional Laser skin resurfacing" section of this websire.

Laser resurfacing (a.k.a. laser peel) is one of the most popular invasive procedures in cosmetic surgery.

Benefits

Research studies agree that properly performed laser resurfacing can visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and, in many cases substancially deminish, deeper wrinkles. It is used either on the entire face, or, more commonly, in the areas around the eyes and mouth. The advantages of laser over other resurfacing methods (deeps chemical peels and dermabrasion) include greater precision, less bleeding and discomfort and, possibly, shorter recovery time.

The results of laser resurfacing are particularly noticeable after the initial healing. According to different sources, the results generally last from one to five years. Maintenance treatment with topical agents may prolong beneficial effects of laser resurfacing on the skin appearance. Generally, the wrinkles solely due to skin aging respond better than those due to facial movement, such as smiling, frowning or squinting.

It appears that the results of laser resurfacing vary greately, depending on the technique and patients unique physiology. Some people experience results exceeding their expectations, while others see less benefit. .

Risk

Whether you call it a laser peel or resurfacing, it is still an invasive surgical procedure where top layers of your skin are vaporized by a laser-generated energy burst. In most cases the damage is well controlled and the recovery is smooth. Possible adverse reactions include excessive scarring, infection, loss of normal skin pigmentation, skin redness and dryness, and others. When the procedure is performed skillfully and the patient and technique are properly selected, side effects are relatively infrequent.

Keep in mind that due to variations in individual physiology, adverse reactions can occur even if you are treated by a highly skilled professional. In particular, people with darker skin are more likely to develop uneven pigmentation whereas people who were on accutane (a common acne treatment) or those with certain connective tissue disorders are more prone to scarring. Various inflammatory skin conditions also increase the risk of adverse reactions. Also, laser peels can activate herpes virus and possibly other dormant pathogens. In most cases, a patient is given an oral antiviral drug and sometimes antibiotics before and after the procedure.

It may be prudent to perform a test patch (a small test treatment), particularly in people with darker skin pigmentation to assess the risk of skin discoloration and other side effects.

Immediate Predictable Effects of Ablative Skin Resurfacing

Erythema (Redness) typically occurs for up to several months after ablative skin resurfacing. The mean maximum severity is reduced, and the duration of noticeable erythema and the time until complete resolution of erythema are shorter in patients treated with closed as compared to open wound care techniques. Erythema can be camouflaged with make-up containing green foundation. In addition, sun protection and avoidance should be encouraged during the entire period of post-treatment erythema to minimize post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is particularly important in patients with skin phototypes III through VI. Hyperpigmentation occurs in nearly a third of patients. Preoperative hydroquinone for at least 1 month prior to ablative laser resurfacing may decrease this risk.

Edema (Swelling) develops in the first 48 hours postoperatively. The severity can be controlled with ice packs and head elevation at night. In cases where marked edema develops during or immediately after the procedure, oral corticosteroids may be necessary. The time until complete resolution of edema is significantly less when closed dressings are utilized than with  open wound care postoperatively.
